My Brothers and Sisters in Christ: We are once again in the Hurricane Season. The Atlantic Hurricane Season is from June 1 to November 30. Weather experts inform us that this is the sixth year in a row that we have had a named storm before the official start of the Hurricane Season. This year we have already had two such named storms before the start of the Hurricane Season.

I would like to welcome all the members of the Judiciary and the Bar who have gathered for this celebration of the Red Mass. The Red Mass is a special occasion in our liturgical year. Annually we gather, at the start of the legal year, to invoke the guidance of the Holy Spirit on the legal profession, the judiciary and associate groups.
We, the Roman Catholic Bishops of the Antilles Episcopal Conference in the Caribbean welcome the proclamation by Pope Francis of a Holy Year of Mercy which commenced with the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception on the 8th day of December 2015, and which will end on the Feast of Christ the King on the 20th day of November 2016.

On Thursday October 11, 2012 the Holy Father will open a special Year of Faith. The Year of Faith will be observed by the faithful around the world. The opening date is also the 50th anniversary of the start of the Second Vatican Council. The Year of Faith will conclude on November 24, 2013, the Feast of Christ the King.

At this time we find ourselves in the aftermath of a hurricane. The days and weeks following the impact of a hurricane are often a time of recovery, restoration and an attempt to return to our normal way of life. It is often an unsettled and uncertain time.

The Bahamian community is currently engaged in much discussion surrounding the possibility of the legalization of gambling. Surely this matter calls for much serious thought and research as part of an in-depth, national conversation. Such conversation is a necessary aspect of the formation of public policy in a strong democracy. I wish here to offer an initial contribution to that conversation.
We, the Bishops of the Antilles Episcopal Conference, recognise our duty to reflect with Catholics, other Christians, and indeed with peoples of other faiths in the Caribbean, on matters that affect all our lives.
